UN business and human rights treaty negotiations – a long and winding road

In October 2022, the Intergovernmental Working Group on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rights (IGWG) conducted an eighth round of negotiations on a new UN treaty. The latest round of talks in Geneva highlighted the political and legal challenges that continue to stymie the effort to draft a “Legally Binding Instrument to Regulate, in International Human Rights Law, the Activities of Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises”, eight years after the talks first began. We outline some of the thornier political and legal issues raised by the proposed treaty.
